About Us

The Ballarat Old Cemetery has over 30,000 interments and is rich in Ballarat's history commencing from the gold rush days. Enjoy a walk through the heritage trails of the people who made Ballarat or use your mobile phone for a commentary to guide you through the Anzac Walk. The information centre houses a wealth of information. Included is a touch screen computer, enabling you to research your family history, as well as the impact of the early settlers of European and Chinese descent. The cemetery includes a number of architectural features including the graves and monuments of the soldiers and diggers from the Eureka uprising of 1854. Articles and research tools are available free of charge at the information centre but a donation box is available for those who wish to make a contribution to maintaining the cemetery services. When leaving the Old Cemetery, travel to the New Cemetery just two kilometres away, where you can continue your research and grab a cuppa at the 'Forget Me Not Café'. The Ballarat New Cemetery has many historical monuments and is set amongst magnificent botanic gardens which includes over 2,600 roses in bloom from November to June.
