About Us

The history of Wangaratta is full of surprises. Wangaratta Stories is a professionally produced exhibition presenting treasures from the Wangaratta Historical Society, and featuring wonderful photographs from the glass plate negative collection. The exhibition provides an overview of events that shaped Wangaratta, and shares some great local stories, including battles and unlikely friendships, sly grog shops, tragic losses, comedy acts and a goat race. Visitors can view rarely seen historic items, such as Bpangerang stone tools, a piece of the original punt over the Ovens River, a letter from a mother to her son in a Prisoner of War Camp, and a locally made 1960s cardigan. Short films add to the experience, and visitors can take a selfie in front of a vintage photographic studio background. The Wangaratta Stories exhibition provides an enticing introduction for visitors to Wangaratta, and an opportunity for locals to drop in to see some of the interesting items that Wangaratta Historical Society cares for.
